A Feast Fit for Royalty
We arrived back at Shahpura House by 8:30 PM, completely drenched from the heavy rain. Initially, we considered staying in and ordering dinner to our room, seeking comfort in the coziness of the night. However, we were quickly intrigued by the mention of Rasa, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, where a live musical night was held every evening. The idea of enjoying live music while dining in a regal ambiance was too tempting to resist, so we decided to venture out despite the rain. It felt like the perfect way to end a rainy day, embracing the elegance of Shahpura House with a musical backdrop. The anticipation of the evening ahead had us excited for what was to come. We got ready for dinner at Rasa Restaurant, located on the rooftop of Shahpura House. The restaurant offered a panoramic view of Jaipur, its lights shimmering against the night sky. As we stepped into Rasa, the fine dining restaurant at Shahpura House, we were immediately captivated by its regal ambiance. The décor was a blend of contemporary elegance and traditional Rajasthani opulence. Soft, ambient lighting bathed the room in a warm glow, highlighting the intricate carvings on the walls and the plush upholstery of the seating. As we settled in, we were warmly greeted by Kalo Ram Ji, our server for the evening. His cheerful personality and genuine hospitality immediately stood out, and his knowledge of the menu was impressive. He explained each of the signature dishes, sharing details about their preparation and flavors, encouraging us to indulge in the specialties of the house. The menu at Rasa was an exquisite blend of local Rajasthani cuisine and popular Indian especially North Indian options, catering to a variety of tastes. From laal maas, a traditional fiery lamb curry, to creamy paneer tikka, the choices reflected the region’s rich culinary heritage. As we savored each course, ghazal performers began serenading the guests, taking song requests from diners.
Their soulful melodies filled the air, enhancing the already magical ambiance. It added a cultural richness to the evening, turning dinner into an immersive experience. We decided to try a spread that included dal tadka, baingan ka bharta, laal maas, along with juicy tikkas and piping hot chapatis. The daal tadka was beautifully balanced—rich, creamy, and with just the right kick of spices. Each spoonful was comforting, with the smoky tempering of garlic and cumin elevating the humble dish into something memorable. The baingan ka bharta, a smoky roasted eggplant dish, was a revelation. The eggplant was mashed and spiced perfectly, its soft texture blending harmoniously with the bold flavors of onion, tomatoes, and green chilies, creating a dish that was rustic yet refined. But the star of the meal was undoubtedly the laal maas. This traditional Rajasthani lamb curry was everything we had hoped for—tender, slow-cooked pieces of meat enveloped in a fiery red sauce, rich with chili heat and robust spices. The dish was intense, but the flavors were well-rounded, making each bite an indulgent affair.
The juicy tikkas provided a delightful contrast to the heavier curries. Charred to perfection on the outside yet succulent and flavorful inside, they melted in the mouth with each bite. Paired with hot chapatis fresh off the griddle, it was a feast that Kalo Ram Ji assured us would be memorable, and he was right.
